I've been using Glidewell Labs in California for at least 15 years. They stay current. Their aesthetic work is uncompromised. It's very good.
Something new and exciting we're doing with Glidewell Labs is we're actually scanning the impression for crowns. Once a crown is prepared in a patient's mouth, instead of getting out the gooey stuff and taking an impression, holding it in place for five minutes, we just have a digital camera that we photograph the tooth from many different angles. This scan gets emailed to our lab in California, Glidewell, and they make the crown.
A patient doesn't have to worry about that impression. They know that by getting a scan, the crown's going to fit excellent because they're seeing exactly what I see.
Get Your Smile Back With A Dental Crown Or Bridge
There are several reasons to replace missing teeth or repair teeth that are damaged:
- Get relief from tooth or gum pain by preventing further injury or infection.
- Enjoy a wider variety of foods once you’re able to chew whatever you like.
- Gain self-confidence about your smile once you restore damaged or missing teeth with beautiful, natural-looking restorations.
When your teeth are damaged by tooth decay, sometimes you need more than a filling. If decay spreads to the pulp of your tooth, you could need the infected pulp removed entirely. This process, known as a root canal, can prevent the spread of infection and end your tooth pain. And once the infection is gone, we’ll cover the tooth with a natural-looking dental crown. You’ll look and feel better.Dr. Spilman on bridges Read Transcript
There's an area of dentistry called prosthodontics, which basically means filling in the holes. There are different ways to go about filling in the gaps where people have lost teeth. The best way, or one of the best ways, to go about it is a fixed bridge. A bridge goes from one tooth to the next and fills in the missing tooth, and what you need to know about the bridge is it's permanent. It's cemented in place and should stay a very long time. The other way to replace a tooth is something that you take in and out, which is called a partial denture. Both accomplish the same thing, but the bridge is cemented permanently and the partial denture you have to remove. A fixed bridge does many things and also, a partial or removable bridge does the same thing.
Number one, it immediately fills in teeth making a patient feel better. Number two, it provides much better chewing capacity. Then number three, it stabilizes the adjacent teeth next to the hole or the missing tooth, so they don't shift or move any further.
Aside from saving a tooth after root canal therapy, dental crowns serve a variety of purposes:
- They protect your teeth from further damage.
- They make damaged teeth look attractive again.
- They can serve as a restoration on a dental implant.
Sometimes you can replace a missing tooth with a dental bridge. Bridges fill in – or “bridge” – gaps left by missing teeth. They fit right up against your natural teeth and can be supported by the teeth surrounding your gap or by a dental implant.

All we need is an impression of the contoured tooth, and we’ll create your custom restoration from porcelain, ceramic, or zirconia. We offer all the porcelain crowns from the respected Glidewell lab, and we offer durable, lifelike e.max and BruxZir zirconia crowns if preferred. We’ll discuss all the materials with you so you can make the best decision.
