Which Teeth Whitening Option Should I Choose?

Thank goodness, the latest election cycle is over. We won’t have to see any campaign ads for a while! Instead of influencing our opinions, these ads mostly seem to highlight how divisive the political climate is these days.

If there is one thing Americans can agree on, it’s what makes a smile look great. Ninety-six percent of respondents to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey said a white smile makes people more attractive.

Unfortunately, there are many things that can discolor your smile, from your daily cup of coffee to medications you are taking. The good news is, we have more than one way of whitening teeth – including a teeth whitening option that is right for you.

Call 727-645-4727 to find out about our cosmetic dental treatments that will brighten your smile. Dr. Jeffery Spilman is happy to discuss them and help you select the one that’s best for you.  In the meantime, we’ve provided more information for you here on some of the procedures you can choose.

Teeth Whitening Treatments Are Least Costly Option

It makes sense for many people to start with the most conservative – and least costly –  of our treatments as their first teeth whitening option. You can get a teeth whitening treatment in our office, or we’ll provide you with professional supplies you can use in your own home.

Our office treatment will get your teeth up to 10 shades whiter in about an hour. You just sit back and relax while we apply the gel, then wait for your teeth to brighten. You can snuggle up with a pillow and blanket and/or listen to music with headphones while you wait.

If you’d prefer the convenience of professional teeth whitening at home, we’ll make customized whitening trays for you and provide you with professional-strength gel you can use whenever you’d like. Your choices are:

  • DayWhite Gel – Designed to be applied for 15 minutes twice a day.
  • NiteWhite Gel – Designed to be worn overnight or for two to four hours during the day.

With either method, you’ll reach optimum whitening in about two weeks.

Maybe you’re wondering why you should use our product when you can buy a cheaper product at any drugstore. Well, you get what you pay for! Drugstore products are less effective because they contain a lower concentration of whitening ingredients. The more powerful formula of our teeth whitening products will get your smile brighter.

In addition, our products are:

  • Easier to Use – Your trays fit well since they are made using impressions of your teeth. They are much easier to use than the messy strips or flimsy trays that come with drugstore products. They make it simple to get complete coverage.
  • More Predictable – We only use products we know and trust. You won’t experience any unexpected surprises!

Teeth Whitening Doesn’t Always Work

Some kinds of discoloration don’t respond well to teeth whitening treatments. Whitening works well on stains that only affect the outer layer of tooth enamel. But it’s often not effective for intrinsic stains, where the inside of your tooth has darkened or changed color. Common causes of intrinsic stains include certain medications like tetracycline or a blow or other injury to your tooth.

Your enamel gets thinner as you get older, which can also give you dingy-looking teeth. And certain shades simply respond better to teeth whitening procedures than others. Teeth with yellow/brown undertones are typically easier to lighten than those with green/gray tones.

Veneers Are Another Teeth Whitening Option

If teeth whitening doesn’t work for you, dental veneers may be the right teeth whitening option for you. Veneers are thin pieces of tooth-colored material that are custom-made for you at a dental lab after we provide them with impressions of your teeth and other information. When your veneers arrive, Dr. Spilman applies them to the front surfaces of your teeth. You can typically get veneers in just a few appointments.

We offer several kinds of veneers:

  • Traditional Porcelain Veneers – Require a small amount of enamel to be removed from your teeth.
  • Vivaneers or Lumineers – These veneers require less enamel to be removed from your teeth. It’s possible we may not need to remove any enamel at all for these minimal-prep veneers.

In addition to stains, you can use veneers to conceal flaws like chips, small cracks, and misshapen teeth. They can even be used to lengthen the look of too-short or worn-down teeth. While veneers are more expensive than whitening, they resist staining and will look terrific for many years with proper care.
