Fluoride Is Part Of Preventive Dentistry In St. Petersburg

Hello again! Thanks for checking out the virtual home of Jeffery Spilman, DDS. We are proud to be your dentist in sunny St. Petersburg, FL. Our mission is to keep your mouth clean and your smile looking its best all through life.

It is hard to believe that we are already well into December. Where does the time go?

With the new year approaching, everyone is thinking about re-setting their habits and living healthier lives. As such, with today’s blogpost we wanted to help you achieve a higher level of wellness by talking about preventive dentistry, which is what will keep disease and decay at bay. While it is important to have good hygiene practices in-place at home, in order to further prevent gum disease and cavities, it helps to have a dentist you can trust on your side. Fortunately, we are here for you.

We offer a variety of preventive services including fluoride treatments. Do you know what Fluoride brings to the table?

Fluoride Will Make You Smile

This is how things tend to work: as bacteria gathers on your teeth, it forms a clingy film known as plaque. Plaque is bad news for good oral health.

As it happens, the dangerous bacteria in plaque feeds on sugar from your food and changes it into acid that corrodes your tooth enamel and causes decay. This is how cavities form, and if they are not treated, you could be facing major issues like root canals and extractions.

Once the bacteria advances below the gumline, you could be dealing with gingivitis and periodontal disease, two forms of gum disease that have nasty consequences for your mouth and possibly your entire body. You won’t want to deal with that if you can avoid it.

Luckily, fluoride is quite effective at shutting down this process. Fluoride actually forms its own protective film on your teeth. This film thwarts the bacteria’s ability to stick together, which makes it nearly impossible for plaque to gain a foothold on your teeth.

What’s more, fluoride can even slow the conversion of sugar into acid, buying you some time to fight off the bacteria. And it aids in a process known as remineralization, wherein your body uses calcium to replace the minerals lost from the early stages of tooth decay.

Plus, fluoride that is ingested helps children’s teeth to build strong enamel. This allows them to sidestep many would-have-been cavities.

At the end of the day, fluoride protects your teeth and actually helps repair damage. As such, it should be a regular part of your oral hygiene routine!

Fluoride In St. Petersburg, FL

It is easier than you might think to get the level of fluoride that will keep your mouth fresh and healthy. You can actually find fluoride-fortified toothpastes in most Florida supermarkets. And, if you read the labels carefully, you will also be able to load up on mouthwash that contains it too. But one of the easiest access points for fluoride is your water faucet right in your home. Beginning in the middle of the last century, our public tap water has been infused with it! Nice, right?

Fluoride Treatments Keep Decay Away

More than all that, your St. Petersburg dentist can also set you up with a fluoride treatment that is a more intensive and effective way of protecting your teeth.

As you now know, fluoride is a natural compound that prevents tooth decay, strengthens teeth, and reduces oversensitivity. At Jeffery Spilman, DDS, it is just part of the excellent preventive treatment you will receive if you are entrusted to our care.

In our office, we take preventive dental care very seriously, especially when it comes to our youngest patients. MSo, make sure you ask about the other things we can do to help.
