It's seeing the before and after of someone that comes in and their mouth is just a complete wreck. They've run into situations where they maybe, can't afford it, maybe they're scared, or maybe they've taken care of everyone else except their self. Then, we come and they think everything's lost, “I'm going to lose all my teeth.” Then we can tell them, "Hey, it's not that bad. We can set up a plan and we'll take things one step at a time,” seeing them all the way through, and when it comes out that they're very happy with their mouth, that's very rewarding to see the whole thing come to fruition. They become our best patients and our best referral sources.
Dr. Spilman came into the dental industry naturally. His father was a dentist, and the two practiced together for nearly 10 years. And it really has remained a family business – Dr. Spilman’s son is studying pre-dentistry in school. It looks like the family love of dentistry will be passed down one more generation!
Above all, Dr. Spilman believes in learning. Being aware of and trained in the newest techniques and technologies is necessary to provide his patients the best care possible. He knows that technology takes effort, and he is willing to put in the work to serve his patients. Our office has been updated with the latest dental technology – not for the sake of being trendy, but to keep up with evolving technology. Our priority is what works best.
As a student, Dr. Spilman’s pursuit of knowledge resulted in recognition of his high personal standards. After earning a degree in biology from DePauw University in 1987, he went on to study dentistry at Indiana University. He was given the Dr. Tillman E. Miller award for clinical excellence and the Academy of Operative Dentistry award for highest clinical excellence. In the years since his graduation in 1991, Dr. Spilman has continued his education by:
- Attending the Dawson Academy for occlusion (bite) and full-mouth rehabilitation.
- Studying under internationally renowned dentist Dr. William Dickerson for aesthetic dentistry.
- Participating in continuing education every year.
Dr. Spilman enjoys an approach to care that’s off the beaten path. No two mouths are the same, and no two patients are the same. So no two treatment plans should be the same! Continuing education means that Dr. Spilman can provide his patients with options that are conventional and modern. Our flexible hours, including some evening and Saturday hours, and longer appointment times allow for a patient-focused experience that takes your needs and preferences into consideration. That’s what sets Dr. Spilman apart.
When not practicing dentistry or continuing his education in dentistry, Dr. Spilman enjoys spending time with his wife and watching sports – especially college football and basketball. Dr. Spilman’s wife, Heather, is a professor of Philosphy & Ethics at St. Petersburg College. While his two children attend the University of Florida in Gainesville (go Gators!), he remains an avid supporter of Indiana basketball.
