Dental Veneers in St. Petersburg, FL
I work with two kinds of veneers. Over 25 years I’ve noticed that if you put certain expectations on porcelain and the bit isn’t right, or if you are asking the porcelain to do too much, they are going to break so there are certain cases where I do almost a modified veneer with patients when I know it really needs the strength where I’m going to have to drill on the tooth a little bit, especially in between the teeth to help keep it in and there are also perfect cases for no prep veneers. I use Glidewell Laboratories and they have a product called Vivaneer that is a thin porcelain, pressed ceramic and it is beautiful. The ideal candidate for those would be candidates who have spaces between their teeth who are looking to fill in gaps, where occlusion is not a problem and we’re looking to lengthen their teeth and not to mention just to lighten their teeth. These are patients where bleach doesn’t do the job. You can bleach and bleach a patient who has Tetracycline staining and sometimes you just have to cover the stain up.
What are dental veneers? Veneers are incredibly thin shells made of ceramic or porcelain that fit permanently over your teeth. At Jeffery A. Spilman DDS, we recommend dental veneers to our patients to correct a number of esthetic issues, including chipped or discolored teeth, gaps, uneven teeth, or a gummy smile. We typically recommend either Vivaneers no-prep veneers or Lumineers, but we are happy to have any brand of pressed ceramic veneers made for you to fit your personal preferences.
If you have heavy staining or if the natural shade of your teeth is fairly dark, we may recommend teeth veneers instead of teeth whitening. In most cases, we will recommend this if you also need to address some minor misalignment issues, chipped teeth, or uneven teeth. In these cases, it is more cost effective to select veneers to correct and brighten the color of your teeth than to attempt to whiten your enamel.
Straightening Your Smile
If you have broken or chipped teeth, or if your teeth are out of alignment or have gaps between them, we may also be able to correct these issues with the help of dental veneers. Many celebrities correct gaps between their teeth and uneven teeth with veneers, as this treatment takes just one or two visits and some minor preparation, rather than months (or even years) of correction with braces or other alignment tools.
Correcting a Gummy Smile
If your gums extend too far down onto your teeth, they can make your teeth appear small and out of proportion. This is called a gummy smile, and we can often correct it with gum reshaping or recontouring, but we can also correct it with teeth veneers.
Veneers can be made to be longer than your natural teeth, effectively balancing the proportions between teeth and gums and giving you a more attractive smile. If you have a gummy smile, Dr. Spilman will be happy to discuss which treatment is best for you and your gums with you when you come in for a consultation.
No-Prep or Minimal Prep Veneers
Some patients are hesitant to choose veneers because of the prep required to install them. With traditional veneers, your gums and teeth need to be numbed to prepare them for dental veneers. We do this because your teeth need to be shaved down to make room for the dental veneers.
However, Vivaneers and Lumineers can be made to have minimal prep or no prep at all. With no-prep veneers, you will not need to have your teeth shaved down, and no anesthetic will be necessary.
