I really believe that implants have revolutionized dentistry. For years, people had to live with ill-fitting, poorly fitting dentures that didn’t look good, didn’t chew good, didn’t fit good. Now we have the ability to actually replace teeth and when we replace teeth with dental implants, we can put crowns on them. We can put a denture that locks in place so it doesn’t move when a patient eats. Dental implants have completely saved people and their ability to chew, older patients and their ability to take on nourishment. It has been revolutionary. I work with a specialist in the area that places the implants, specialists I’ve been working with for a decade who do a very nice job and then the patient comes back to me and I restore the implant. Once again, every implant case is different. The patient might need to replace one tooth, maybe had an accident or maybe had a tooth missing when they were a kid or removed when they were a kid and now they want to do something about it. Once again, every case is different and I love the specialists I work with and implant dentistry is probably one of the most rewarding fields that I could possibly be in, not just for the patient but for me as a dentist and for our staff.

What are dental implants? Dental implants are an incredible innovation in the world of restorative dentistry. When you choose this method over a bridge or dentures to replace missing teeth, you will have a metal implant installed in your jaw. At this point a temporary crown will most likely be placed over the implant to protect it as your mouth heals. Once your gums have healed from the initial implant surgery, a permanent crown will then be installed over the implant.

Restoring Existing Implants

The beauty of dental implant procedure is that they perfectly simulate natural teeth. However, over time your prosthetic crowns may experience wear and tear or may become damaged due to trauma. Fortunately, at Jeffery A. Spilman, we are more than capable of assisting you if this occurs.

With the help of Glidewell Labs in California, we are able to create new crowns and restore your implants to their former beauty and function. When Dr. Spilman finishes with your implant restoration, your teeth will look gorgeous and feel great, too.

If You are Considering Implants

We do not perform initial dental implants in St. Petersburg, FL at Jeffery A. Spilman DDS. However, if you have one or more missing teeth and you do not already have dental implants, we can refer you to an amazing specialist just two miles away from our office. This doctor is the best specialist Dr. Spilman has met in his 25 years in practice, and they have a fantastic relationship and work very well together.

Once you have your implants, we can help you with a number of options for your prosthetics. For example, if you have a row of contiguous implants, we might recommend implant-retained dentures (supported by bars). We are also happy to work with and restore All on 4 and All on 6 implant types, and we offer same-day loading of implant-retained or implant-supported dentures, as well.

Unlike single dental implants, which will support one permanent prosthetic crown each, both of these options allow you to remove your dentures for cleaning and maintenance. Some patients prefer this to permanent prosthetics, but the choice is largely dependent on how many teeth you are missing, how much bone mass you have left in your jaw, and your own personal preferences.
